As part of a cross-functional effort to establish a internal computational workflow for Optical Pooled Screen (OPS) experiments, one major focus of the Zhu lab in the Genentech Computational Sciences (gCS) is devising metrics and statistical frameworks that best analyzes the OPS image data for answering difficult biological questions as well as helping improve the OPS technology.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on site

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a graduate student currently enrolled in a PhD program with demonstrated skills and interest in analyzing microscopy images with deep learning based algorithms in python. We seek a self-motivated, independent, and creative intern to contribute to an interesting and high-priority research question in our group. The goal of this internship project is to establish a computational workflow to phenotype analysis of OPS images. More specific responsibilities includes:

  • Process the in-house and published OPS images to extract meaningful features
  • Implement novel computational methods on analyzing features and gain biological insights
  • Assess the accuracy of results and evaluate the performance between traditional methods and novel approaches
  • Contribute code to our internal OPS computational workflow
  • Participate and present results in our group and department meetings

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship
  • Program start dates are in May and June 2024
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

  • PhD Student (pursuing PhD, not completed) who are available to work full time for the duration of the internship
  • Preferred majors: Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics or Biostatistics

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Python and R
  • Expertise in python and command line tools for the analysis of microscopy images
  • Experience in Deep Learning methods for high-throughput screening
  • The successful candidate will be expected to perform data analysis independently, iterate and devise new approaches when problems are encountered, and interact with colleagues to evaluate and interpret findings

Other Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will bring strong analytical and problem-solving abilities as well as excellent communication skills
  • Record of achievement, including high-impact first author publication or equivalent, and/or code repositories on Github
  • Candidates with a strong statistics background are preferred

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $22.00 – $50.00 per hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits. ​
