Admissions to PhD Program January 2023 – IISER

Applications are invited from prospective candidates for admission to the PhD Program at IISER Mohali in the areas of Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences, for the session beginning in January 2023. Candidates interested in pursuing research in interdisciplinary areas are also encouraged to apply. IISER Mohali is one of the PMRF granting institutes offering PMRF Fellowship to meritorious Ph.D. candidates. Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant should have a Master’s degree/ B.Tech/ MBBS/ M.Tech with a good academic record (at least a high second class) and should be CSIR or UGC-JRF / ICMR-JRF/ DBT-JRF/ DBT-BINC/ DST- INSPIRE/ NBHM qualified in the relevant subject or other national-level fellowship / sponsored fellowship by private or state agencies. Departmental Eligibility Criteria:

Biological Sciences: The applicant should have a Master’s degree/ B.Tech/ MBBS/ M.Tech/ /M. Pharm with a good academic record (at least 60% and above) and should be GATE/ CSIR or UGC-JRF/ ICMR-JRF/ DBT- JRF/ DBT-BINC / DST-INSPIRE qualified in the relevant subject.

Chemical Sciences: The applicant should have a Master’s degree/ B.Tech / MBBS / M.Tech / M.Pharm in Chemical sciences, Physical and Biochemical sciences/biotechnology/ nanotechnology or any other relevant subject with a good academic record (at least a high second class) and should be CSIR or UGC- JRF / ICMR-JRF/ DBT-JRF/ DBT-BINC/ DST- INSPIRE qualified in the relevant subject or other national- level fellowship/ sponsored fellowship by private or state agencies. The research interests of the candidates will be given due consideration while assigning a laboratory and guide. Accordingly, additional information may be sought from the candidates shortlisted for interview. The candidates must check their email periodically and provide necessary information, if asked, failing which may lead to cancellation of their application.

Physical Sciences: The applicant should have a Master’s degree/ B.Tech / M.Tech with a good academic record (at least a high second class) and should be CSIR or UGC-JRF / ICMR-JRF/ DST- INSPIRE qualified in the relevant subject.

Mathematical Sciences:

Eligibility: Master’s degree or equivalent B. Tech degree with a good academic record (at least a high second class).

The candidate should also have passed one of the following entrance tests: CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, or UGC- NET for JRF, or GATE (all of these to be valid as on January 1, 2023), or the NBHM 2022 with a valid fellowship.

Concerning candidates who have passed one of the above examinations: only eligible candidates who will be short-listed on the basis of their scores in one of the above examinations may be called for the next round of the selection process that includes an interview.

 Earth and Environmental Sciences:  An applicant should have a MSc/M. Tech degree with a first class academic record throughout (minimum 65% for General/OBC category and minimum 60% for SC/ST/PD) in one or more of the following subjects: Atmospheric Sciences / Computer Sciences / Climate Sciences /Chemistry / Data Sciences / Artificial Intelligence / Earth and Environmental Sciences / Environmental Microbiology / Environmental Biotechnology / Geology / Geophysics / Hydrology / Mathematics / Meteorology / Microwave Remote Sensing / Planetary Science / Physics / Remote Sensing / Geomatics Engineering or BTech degree (with a minimum 75% for General/OBC category and minimum 70% for SC/ST/PD) in one or more of the following subjects: Computer Science and Information Technology/Data Sciences/ Artificial Intelligence / engineering streams (e.g. Civil / Aerospace / Agriculture / Electrical / Electronics and Communication).

Applicants should have a valid national level qualifying exam such as GATE, CSIR-UGC (JRF/LS)/DST- Inspire fellowship/DBT-JRF. Apart from applying online, an applicant must send a SOP document of 600 words in the following format SOP template (strictly follow the format) to the following email address: phdees@iisermohali.ac.in mentioning the broad subject area (e.g. Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geology, etc) as the subject of the email, failing which the application may not be considered for shortlisting. The candidates who have not yet qualified (including those who are awaiting results) for any of the above-mentioned national eligibility tests will not be shortlisted.

Humanities and Social Sciences:  An applicant should have M.A./M.Sc./M.Phil degree (minimum 55% for General and OBC category, minimum 50% for SC/ST/PD.) in one or more of the following subjects: Critical Infrastructure Studies / Development Studies / Economics / English Literature in the areas of Trauma Studies, Scatology Studies, and Science-in-theatre/fiction / Feminist Geography / Labour Studies / Modern Indian History / Political Economy / Public Policy Studies / Urban Studies. Apart from applying online, an applicant must send a statement of proposed research (minimum 1500 words) to the following email address: hssiisermohali@gmail.com mentioning the broad subject area (History, Literature, Economics, etc.) as the subject of the email, failing which the application will not be considered for shortlisting. This email address is meant ONLY for sending the statement of the proposed research for Humanities and Social Sciences. Having qualified UGC/NET or UGC-NET-JRF or any other national level eligibility test is required at the time of the PhD application submission. The candidates who have not yet qualified (including those who are awaiting results) any of the above-mentioned national eligibility tests will not be shortlisted. In particular, candidates belonging to the SC/ST categories who do not have external fellowships are encouraged to apply.

PMRF Fellowship: IISER Mohali is one of the PMRF granting institutes offering PMRF Fellowship to meritorious Ph.D. candidates. To apply for PMRF through direct entry, the candidate needs to get selected in our regular Ph.D. program, and the Institute will recommend selected few candidates for PMRF. The final decision will be taken by the National Level Discipline-Specific Selection Committee. Detailed eligibility criteria are mentioned on the (https://dec2020.pmrf.in/) and the same will be applicable. Students from SC/ST/PD/OBC-NCL/EWS who have not qualified the national level tests mentioned above, but are GATE/JEST/GPAT/ICAR-NET/NET-LS qualified in the relevant subject would be eligible for consideration of award of an institute PhD fellowship, and are hence also encouraged to apply.
